The property know as “Overhills Mansion” was originally owned
by Henry James, a Baltimore lumber tycoon. He planted the thirty -two acre
estate with 50 specimen trees from around the world. The mansion, with its
massive portico supported by columns was built in 1897 for Mr. James to present
as a wedding gift to his son Norman.
Overhills Mansion was built with quality materials from Mr.
James lumber yards. Massive support beams and beautifully carved moldings speak
of its rich history. In the 1920's the ballroom was enlarged in order to host a
wedding reception.
During the Great Depression, James O'Donnell, owner of “
People's Drug” chain, purchased the mansion for his daughter and son-in-law.
In 1987, the current owners and Whitehouse Caterers worked
together to restore this grand Victorian era mansion, preserving as much as
possible, the history and grandeur of the past. The original decor of the
building has largely been maintained with its crystal sconces, cut crystal
chandelier, carved moldings and hand-cut Italian marble fireplaces.
